8% Income Tax Rate Option

This is also the last day to choose the 8% Income Tax Rate option if you’re a self-employed individual or professional with gross sales or receipts below P3,000,000 for the year. This option came into play with the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law back in 2018.

Now, let’s break down the 8% Income Tax Rate Option:

Typically, self-employed folks (like single proprietors, professionals, and mixed-income earners) have their income taxed using the Graduated Income Tax Rates. But with the TRAIN Law, you now have the choice between the Graduated Rates or the 8% Rate.

Eligibility Criteria: Is the 8% Income Tax Rate for You?

To be eligible for the 8% option, you need to meet these requirements:

  • You’re a self-employed individual/professional with gross sales/receipts and other non-operating income under P3,000,000 for the year.
  • You’re a mixed-income earner, meaning you earn compensation income and income from business/profession, with gross sales/receipts and other non-operating income under P3,000,000.
  • You’ve indicated your choice to use the 8% rate through one of these methods:

For New Business Registrants

  1. Upon registration using BIR Form 1901; or
  2. On the initial quarter return, i.e., BIR Form No. 2551Q and/or 1701Q of the taxable year after the commencement of a new business/practice of profession.

For Existing Individual Business Taxpayers

  1. Filing of BIR Form No. 1905 at the beginning of the taxable year; or
  2. 1st Quarterly Percentage Tax Return; and/or

Remember, once you choose the 8% option, you can’t change it for the current tax year.
